Absolutely horrible

Although this restaurant has a beautiful view of the ocean and Kaho'olawe, the rest of my dining experience was terrible. The service was limited, and the food was a complete disaster. Nothing was cooked anywhere near presentable. The deep fried shrimps I was served were completely raw on the inside, with burnt batter on the outside. The duck I had was overcooked, dry and tough. And the vegetable dish my wife had was barely cooked. If I wanted raw sweet potatoes, I would go and buy them myself. There is no way that I would ever dine here again.
A Great Valentine's Day

My new wife and I had just been married a few days earlier, and we decided to spend Valentine's Day at the FIve Palms. We had told the reservation clerk that we were newlyweds, and we indeed got the special treatment that we had hoped for. The staff seated us at a special table all by itself at a window (which they graciously slid open for us, thereby adding sea breezes and the sounds of surf to our dining pleasure), on what is probably the most crowded night of the year for restaurants. Our fixed price dinner ($85 each, including a generous selection of wine pairings, $65 without) was not only excellent, but the prices had clearly not been jacked up to gouge Valentine's Day patrons - a very classy touch. The dinner included a substantial sized steak and fish (Mahi Mahi), salad, amuse bouches, a nice dessert, and, of course, an individual wine pairing with each course. Frankly, it was all so much that I couldn't finish my dessert. The server was a local gal who pampered us and made us feel quite welcome. What a wonderful first Valentine's Day for a newly married couple. By the way, I read the preceding one-star review by old_f**t, or whomever, and I simply find it hard to believe that anyone could get sick on the food at this fine restaurant (unless they'd had a bit too much to drink or went off of their typical "sundowner" diet). I suppose that it theoretically could happen anywhere, and indeed we did have the worst meal of our trip to Maui at the legendary Mama's Fish House in Paia. Our food there was so inferior that I sent the shrimp won ton back, and the prices were astronomical ($12-14 [sic] for a cup of coffee, etc.]. Save your hard-earned moola and try the Five Palms.

OK - i see all the rave reviews so for the sake of the owners of this place I hope that my experience was not the norm. However, I dined with several locals last night and shared my experience at this place with them. They were not surprised by the poor experience - and said it was a place they wouldn't recommend or attend even though they live here year-round. My wife got a fish sandwich. It was bland and uninspired - nothing spectacular at all. I ordered the catch of the day - which was fine, but again quite tasteless and nothing to write home about. What really finished off the poor experience was the following two things: 1. We ordered bloody mary's and mine had an EXTREMELY wilted, soggy, pepper that had gone bad. I couldn't believe that they actually pushed it onto my toothpick and dropped it in my drink. Completely unappetizing. 2. My wife actually got SICK from her meal. She spend the better part of our 2nd to last day in bed feeling nauseous. It really was a frustrating way to spend our afternoon. So - maybe I'm wrong and the locals I've chatted with are wrong, but I would SERIOUSLY consider going to Longhi's or Mama's before this place ANY day.

This is just another hotel restaurant that has a great view and good customer service. The food is below par and a little disorganized, and the prices (even if you allow for the island over-inflation) are way too high for the quality you are getting. You can wind up paying $160 for two people and walk away unsatisfied....to the point where we both could keep eating but still left food on our plate because it was unimpressive and unappetizing. that is all too bad since the view is great and the staff were so nice and helpful.

My two 15 yr. olds and myself were seated in the dining room next to an expansive open window with an incredible view. The service was upscale and friendly. The food was awesome! Take advantage of the 'sunset menu' between 5-6 but the entire menu is just wonderful! The shrimp appetizer is the best I have ever tasted. Worth every penny/dollar. Soda's are not refillable but the staff informs you of that. There is no other restaurant that has the 'ambiance' that the 'Five Palms' offers.
